Hangzhou reached its golden age as capital of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1279), when it was the largest city in the world with over one million inhabitants. The Grand Canal connected Hangzhou to Beijing for over a thousand years. Marco Polo visited in the 13th century and called it "the most beautiful and magnificent city in the world."
