Qiantang River Tidal Bore

The Qiantang River tidal bore (钱塘江大潮) is one of the largest tidal bores in the world, reaching its most spectacular on the eighteenth day of the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar (around the Mid-Autumn Festival). At its peak, the wave can reach heights of up to 9 meters and travels at speeds of up to 40 km/h, drawing thousands of spectators to the river banks. The best viewing spots include Yanguan Town in Haining, about 50 km from Hangzhou. The tidal bore has been observed and celebrated for over 2,000 years and is a unique natural phenomenon of Hangzhou.
